Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

Aromatherapy and essential oils have been known for thousands of years to have positive effects on the mind, body and spirit.

Essential oils are extracted from flowers, roots, branches, or leaves; used in aromatherapy, these products can help in the treatment of everything from insomnia, infections, skin disorders, impotence, arthritis and are know to help relieve stress and protect the immune system.

In fact, many aromatherapists believe essential oils do have the power to heal problems within the mind,body and spirit.  

The essential oils used in aromatherapy trigger a "feel-good" feeling in the brain.  The aroma molecules from the essential oils are responsible for  positive healthy emotional responses, which calm or energizes the body and aromatherapy is also known to help with memory. 

Some of the most popular uses of essential oils are:

Lavender: Relieves depression, inflammation, spasms, headaches, respiratory allergies, muscle aches, nausea, menstrual cramps; lowers blood pressure and a good nights sleep.

Thyme: Relieves digestive problems; lessens laryngitis and coughs; fights bladder and skin infections; relieves pain in the joints.

Eucalyptus: Lowers fever; clears sinuses; has antibacterial and antiviral properties; help relieves coughs.

Peppermint: Alleviates digestive problems; cleans wounds; de-congests the chest; relieves headache, neuralgia, and muscle pain; useful for motion sickness.

Chamomile: Relieves stress; reduces swelling; treats allergic symptoms; relieves insomnia; useful in treating digestive problems.

Rosemary: De-congests the chest; increases circulation, relieves pain, indigestion, gas, and liver problems; lessens swelling; fights infection; helps alleviate depression.

Lemon Balm: Relieves anxiety, depression, hypertension, insomnia, migraine, nervous tension, shock and vertigo. Also may be helpful for asthma, bronchitis, coughs and colds; quiets racing of the heart and slows an overactive thyroid.
